The work involved the installation of a storm drain system to reduce the erosion of the bluff in the vicinity. The project included two different types of tunneling operations (rib & lag tunnel and an encased tunnel), open trench pipe installations, shoring, bedding, backfill, inlet and outlet structures (which include CIDH piles, pile cap grade beams, tie-back anchors, tie-back anchor grade beams, walls, and miscellaneous metal debris racks, fences and railing), significant canyon grading (with sub-drains and rip rap lining), a large access road to the upper inlet structure, a small access road to bluff, 54” Steel Pipe, velocity reducer rings for steel pipe, reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), temporary bypass HDPE pipe, various types of catch basins, manholes, junction structures, concrete collars, native landscaping and erosion control, movement monitoring devices, AC pavement rehabilitation along ingress/egress access route in Palos Verdes Shores Mobile Home Community, temporary storage yard (with construction trailer and perimeter fencing and gates), water quality measures, miscellaneous surface improvement replacements and related removals / relocations / adjustments, traffic control, and related appurtenances.

Mission Trails Pipeline Tunnel Construction

Construction of a tunneled and trenched pipeline which includes improving approximately 11,240 feet of access roads, tunneling of 4,520 feet in two separate tunnels to install 92-inch welded steel pipe, two shafts of approximately 213 feet, 547 feet of trenched 92-inch welded steel pipeline, connections to SDCWA Pipelines 3 and 4, demolition of existing vents, construction of a low-flow river crossing, and implementing repairs to an existing bridge.

Construction of 4,792 lineal feet of 114” reinforced concrete pipe, PVC lined in tunnel and the concrete encasement with PVC liner of 150’ of existing 96” RCP sewer.
Contract Value: $18,340,000
Contract Completion: 1998
The project was constructed through city streets and a Naval training facility. The project included the construction of 90 lineal feet of 18” PVC, one large junction structure, and the handling and disposal of hazardous waste. The tunnel required excavation, shoring, dewatering, welding, grouting, blocking and securing.
